Today's A2K climb: Mt Perisher, Back Perisher Mountain

Continuing my effort to climb all these A2K peaks ... This afternoon's climb with AB is to:

Rank Name                 Elev   Grid Ref
  21 Mt Perisher         2054 m  243 697
  29 Back Perisher Mtn   2014 m  247 708

Earlier this morning, AB and I, together with DN, went climbing around Mt Stilwell and Kangaroo Ridge area. Now, DN decides not to join us for Mt Perisher & Back Perisher Mountain ... he probably had too much of a drink yesterday and wants a rest instead  :-)   And besides, he had climbed these two mountains a few months ago.

Well, I've been to both of them too ... lost count the number of times I had skied all over them in the earlier years before digital cameras and before the internet. And so, I don't have any photograph to prove I have been here. Time to make amends  :-)

Other A2K climbing trips

Scroll forward to the end of this trip report. There is a list, with links, to other A2K climbing trips that I have done.

Today's A2K climb: Mt Stilwell, Kangaroo Ridge, Little Stilwell, The Foxhole

Continuing my effort to climb all these A2K peaks ... This morning's climb, with AB & DN, is to:

Rank Name                 Elev   Grid Ref  Comment
  17 Kangaroo Ridge      2077 m  182 644   Highest point on Kangaroo Ridge
  22 Mt Stilwell         2054 m  187 659
  25 Little Stilwell     2030 m  190 657
  31 The Foxhole         2010 m  198 661

Kangaroo Ridge is not as crowded as other areas of Kosciuszko National Park. Nonetheless, it is a wonderful place to explore around. It has many minor rocky peaks that just beckons you to climb them all.

And when you are tired of climbing, you can wander down to the headwaters of Wrights Creek ...
- Amazing clear mountain stream ... photos #50 to #52
- With fish (Mountain Galaxias) swimming in it ... photo #53

Other A2K climbing trips

       2 Mt Lee
       3 Carruthers Peak
       4 Mt Twynam
       5 rocky peak #2
       6 rocky peak #1
       7 Mt Jagungal
       8 Mt Tate
       9 Mt Stilwell

44)  Passing through some rocky formations

Along the headwaters of Wrights Creek

We now walk along the headwaters of Wrights Creek towards Little Stilwell.

(By the way, Wrights Creek flows into Spencers Creek which flows into Snowy River just before the Snowy River flows into Guthega Pondage.)

45)  Marvelous views of the entire Kangaroo Ridge ~~~
- Upper pic: The 5 red arrows point to, from left to right:
       1 rocky peak #3
       2 rocky peak #2
       3 rocky peak #1
       4 Mt Stilwell
5 Little Stilwell is not far behind this pile or rocks.
- Lower pic: We've moved further along Wrights Creek. The 5 red arrows point to, from left to right:
       1 rocky peak #2
       2 rocky peak #3
       3 Mt Stilwell
4 Little Stilwell is not far behind this pile or rocks.
       5 Mt Perisher

46)  A snow cave on the east side of Kangaroo Ridge (west side of the headwaters of Wrights Creek)

47)  DN inspecting the creek ~~~
- Left red arrow: rocky peak #2
- Right red arrow: rocky peak #1
- Mt Stilwell is not in this pic. It is beyond the right edge.

48)  Headwaters of Wrights Creek ... beautiful clear water
- Red arrow: Kangaroo Ridge 2077-meter unnamed peak ... We came from there.

49)  AB finds water bubbling up from below ... the red circle. Wonder what mechanism causes this phenomenon?
- Lower pics: Zooming in at the bubble in the red circle.

50)  DN reckons there is gold in the creek ... haha !   :-)

51)  Beautiful crystal clear water !  (The entire scene is under water, including the grass.)

52)  This pool looks like an inviting spa with seats. But the water would be freezing cold  :-)
(The 2 pics below are of the same pool, viewed from different directions.)

53)  There are fish in the water.
The fish is Mountain Galaxias (Galaxias olidus), a native Australian which averages about 13 cm in length. It survives in the smaller streams above the treeline through its astonishing ability to jump out of the water and clamber up steep rocks and waterfalls. This fragile but acrobatic fish can also "walk" over rocks and splashes in shallow pools in order to regulate its body temperature.

54)  The 3 pics below form a 360-degree panorama from here at the headwaters of Wrights Creek.
- Upper pic: Kangaroo Ridge ~~~
       • Red arrow: Kangaroo Ridge 2077-meter unnamed peak
       • rocky peak #3 can't be seen from here ... behind the slope.

4 Little Stilwell can't be seen from here, but it is not far behind this pile of rocks.
- Lower pic (continuation to the right of the middle pic):
       • The opposite side of Kangaroo Ridge, and separated from Kangaroo Ridge by Wrights Creek
- Continuation to the right of the lower pic is the upper pic, thus forming a 360-degree panorama.

55)  Zooming into Mt Stilwell & Little Stilwell of photo #54 ~~~
- Upper pic:
       • Left red arrow: Mt Stilwell
       • Right red arrow: Little Stilwell is not far behind this pile of rocks.

To Little Stilwell

56)  We are off Wrights Creek; now heading towards Little Stilwell.
- Upper pic:
       • Little Stilwell can't be seen from here. It is behind the rocky hill on the right.
       • Red arrow: Mt Stilwell ... you can just make out a trig at its summit.
- Lower pic: Little Stilwell is not here yet.

57)  Little Stilwell is also not here. It is behind this rocky hill.

Little Stilwell's south peak

58)  This is it, Little Stilwell, 2030 meters.
DN is climbing up its south peak.
(The north peak is a few steps behind the south peak.)

59)  I've climbed to the top of Little Stilwell's south peak ... now looking back at where we came from ~~~
- Yellow arrow: We walked through the gap between the rocks, as AB has already done.

       • Red arrow: Mt Perisher
       • Red square: (towards south-east) Top station of a ruined chairlift ... see photo #62.
       • The Foxhole cannot be seen from here. It is somewhere behind the big rock to the right of Mt Perisher.

6 (slanting arrow) Mt Stilwell, you can make out its summit trig ... see the insert
            7 Carruthers Peak
- Continuation to the right of the lower pic is photo #60, thus forming a 360-degree panorama.

62)  Zooming towards south-east, to the top station of a ruined chairlift in the red square of photo #59 ~~~
- Another photo of this top station is in photo #66.
- We run out of time to visit this place ... as later on in the afternoon, we intend to climb Mt Perisher and Back Perisher. Ah well, next time.

Little Stilwell's north peak

63)  We've now crossed over to Little Stilwell's north peak, just a few steps from the south peak.
- Starring in the 3 pics below are: me, DN, AB
- The south peak is just behind us. In fact AB is standing there in the upper & middle pics.

       1 Mt Perisher
2 The Foxhole ... This is where we are heading to now.

71)  The Foxhole (red arrow) is in front.
But more interestingly, what is the sun-shade like structure (red circle) doing here ???
It is too high to be a table, and not high enough so that you can stand up-right underneath it. Strange !?!

At The Foxhole summit

72)  We are at The Foxhole summit, 2010 meters.
- Upper pic, left to right: DN, AB
