2017 December: Day trip - Sundial Peak & Viewpoint & Mt Rosea, Grampians National Park, Vic, Australia
Prolog
Grampians National Park (Gariwerd, its aboriginal name; or commonly called The Grampians) is a series of sandstone ridges at the tail end (southern end) of the Australian Great Dividing Range.
The most beautiful, and hence popular spots are around "The Grand Canyon", "Wonderland" and "Pinnacle" areas. But they are usually full of people, a bane to us hikers who avoid the crowd like the plague.
And so, today, I go to climb :
- Sundial Peak ... 802 meters in elevation
- Viewpoint
- Mt Rosea ... 1009 meters
Hardly a soul on that part of the National Park ... Perfect !

In summary, the circuit route is:
- Start at Sundial Carpark at end of Sundial Road
- Walk in a clockwise direction
- To Sundial Peak Lookout
- Climb up Sundial Peak summit
- To Viewpoint
- Walk on a dis-used foot track to Delleys Dell
- Walk on Burma Fireline, then Mt Rosea Track to Mt Rosea summit
- Along Mt Rosea Track northward to Rosea Carpark
- To rocky outcrops on the north-side slope of 767-meter hill
- Finish at Sundial Carpark

Temperature & water
I didn't check the weather before the trip. It turns out to be a hot 37 degrees Celsius in The Grampians. I have 4 litres of water in the backpack. It is not quite enough and I have to ration myself carefully to get through the 8 and a half hours of walking.

Lake Bellfield
To Delleys Dell & Burma Fireline
After Viewpoint, it is to Delleys Dell and Burma Fireline.
- Delleys Dell used to be a carpark by the east side of Silverband Road (C218). Now, it is just an open grass area, no longer a carpark.
- On old maps, Burma Fireline was labelled as Burma Track.
30) There is a foot track, from the east, approaching Delleys Dell and the northern end of Burma Fireline. The foot track is no longer printed on recent maps. Presumably the Victorian National Parks authorities don't want us to walk along it anymore. However I decide to have a go ... because it is a short cut to Mt Rosea. The track is in pretty good condition as shown by the 2 pics below.
31) Along the foot track ... Onopordum acanthium (Scotch or Scottish Thistle, Cotton Thistle) ~~~
Native to Europe and Western Asia ...
...from the Iberian Peninsula, east to Kazakhstan, and north to central Scandinavia.
Widely naturalised elsewhere, with especially large populations present in the United States and Australia.
In Australia, it is mostly regarded as a weed.
Near Delleys Dell
When the foot track approaches Delleys Dell, and just prior to crossing an unnamed creek, it disappears ... Well, I lost it ... Probably because the track is obscured by overgrown scrub.
When you are here, keep as upstream of the creek as possible before attempting to cross it. (ie Keep to the right when coming from the direction of Sundial Peak.) Otherwise the scrub is too thick for you to bash through.

I've passed Delleys Dell and is now on Burma Fireline.

Note 1
At 2:12pm I try to find a foot track which was shown on older maps and which goes directly to Rosea Carpark by descending the steep cliffs on the east side of Mt Rosea range. But I can't find it. Perhaps a landslide had destroyed it ???
So at 2:33pm I give up on that idea and keep going along the Mt Rosea Track.
Note 2
After Mt Rosea summit, I lost the Mt Rosea Track a few times. But every time I realized my mistake and found the track again. To the Victorian National Parks authoriies ... better signage would help !
However at 2:53pm I inadvertently miss the track again. But this time, I can't be bothered to backtrack, so I just go bushbashing westward, reasoning that I'll eventually meet up with the track again.
Well, it is a mistake, as at some places, the bush is atrociously thick to bash through. Thankfully, half an hour later, I meet up with an old disused foot track that is no longer shown on recent maps. Not to worry, it is track and much better than bushbashing. And a further half an hour later, at 3:53pm I am back on the proper Mt Rosea Track.

73) As the afternoon is still early and Sundial Carpark is not far away, I decide to scramble up the rocky slope on the north side of the 767-meter hill between Rosea Carpark and Sundial Carpark ... to check out whether there is any view from the slope.

Post Script - Lakeview Lookout
This trip starts at 8:50am from Sundial Carpark.
