Paul Ma's A2K peaks
A2K peaks - Above 2000-meter peaks in Australia
Out on the internet and from private communication, there are lists of above 2000-meter peaks in Australia. The lists don't have any official status. They are clobbered together by climbing enthusiasts who like to bag high mountains.
But the lists don't match up with each other. Even taking into account prominence rules, why are some peaks missing from one list; and another bunch of peaks missing from another list? I don't understand.
In my case, I'm interested in climbing any peak that has a name, as a name always gives me an emotional pull. If there is a prominence rule that excludes such a peak from being regarded as a peak, well, it isn't going to stop me from climbing it !
And so with this in mind, I've compiled my own list of A2K peaks using the following 2 criteria with no regard to prominence:
- If a peak has a name, and is 2000 meters or higher, then it is in my list.
- If a range/ridge/spur has a name, and its highest point is 2000 meters plus, then include the highest point.
The 33 A2K peaks
And so I come up with the following 33 peaks. They are all bunched together in Kosciuszko National Park in NSW. I am calling the list Paul Ma's A2K peaks :-)

Note 1: Tenison Woods Knoll (west of Mt Twynam) has the dubious distinction of having two other names:
- One is Watsons Crag Dome.
- The other is ... you guessed it ... Mt Dubious ! ... says Derrick Stone in his book "Walks, Tracks & Trails of New South Wales".

Actually, the 3 highest mountains in Australian territory are:
1 Mount McClintock, 3490 meters, Australian Antarctic territory
2 Mount Menzies, 3355 meters, Australian Antarctic territory
3 Mawson Peak, 2745 meters, Heard Island
But sshhh ... keep quiet about it. Else us Aussie peak baggers can't justify calling outselves peak baggers if we've never even seen one of the 3 highest Australian peaks, let alone climbing one :-)
My A2K climbing trips
Armed with the list of 33 A2K peaks, I started a mission to summit them all. The mission is now successfully completed !
- Merritts Spur was the final peak that I climbed ... in 2018 January with DH.
- Mt Kosciuszko was the first peak ... way back in 2011 April with RE.

Like the way you list the sites and give then a name like Etheridge rather than unnamed peak
I juts came back from visiting Mt Kosi, Townsend, Twynam, etc.
I have also done Jagungal many times and the Kerries Risge several. I always though of the peaks here as North Gungartan. I didnt realise so much of the ridge was over 2000m. I only thought the first 2 peaks north of Gungartan Pass were over 2000m
